The clothes in Burberry Prorsum's S/S 2009 collection were described by Christopher Bailey as 'crumpled classics', which explains the timeworn and gently rugged aesthetic that permeated the runway. Inspired by the photographs of Valerie Finnis for the book Garden People, Bailey presented an eclectic mix of vintage-inspired pieces in an earthy palette. The silhouettes were effortless and relaxed, with an emphasis on oversize outerwear and loose pleated dresses. This jacket combines an understated military-inspired aesthetic with the season's signature silhouette and detailing.
The cut is fitted on the upper body, with narrow shoulders and slim sleeves. This is offset by a roomy waist, which produces an easy and flattering A-line silhouette. Despite its relaxed fit, the jacket is precisely tailored, with multiple darts on the front and back that produce a flawless three-dimensional shape. The jacket's elegant and streamlined design is complemented by its luxurious fabric, a dense cotton gabardine with a sateen-like finish. The front is finished with dropped shoulder epaulettes (a S/S 2009 signature), a short lapel and a concealed closure with four contrasting buttons.
The jacket has an abundance of well thought-out details that demonstrate its high quality. The chunky buttons on the front are made from polished metal and are engraved with the Burberry logo. The waist features flapped patch pockets, while the back has an intricately constructed short vent. A luscious jacquard sateen with the Burberry logo lines the interior. There is an abundance of hand stitches, and the shoulders are hand-tailored like traditional menswear. Likewise, the gunmetal buttons are attached by hand using two different threads, resulting in no visible contrasting stitching on the interior. The neck is adorned with a heavy pull chain. Overall, the construction is executed to a very high standard and this is evident in the jacket's sharp lines.
